There is great risk when you are hiring a photographer who is about to pop herself. So, I have a lot of gratitude for this couple who waited literally months hoping all along that I could do their newborn pictures. I went into labor that night after doing this session...it was a relief to feel like I finished well!

Due to the holidays I got a bit behind in terms of posting. Here is a recent newborn session. I have one more this week and then I'm off for a self-maternity leave. I'm off for January/February but will book session for the month of March and beyond. This was my only girl for the month of December, it must be the month for little boys to be born. Anyway, I think you will see she was beautiful. Congrats Arlinghaus family!

Hope you all are enjoying the holidays. I love having snow this time of year even if its cold. There is just something about snow and celebrating at least up here in the north. My friends in the south may have other ideas about what Christmas is about in warmer clients. For me growing up this time of year was about getting out of school, traveling to see family, making snow men and snow forts, ice skating on a frozen lake. Most of all hoping that on Christmas Eve it would snow on the way home from a Candlelight service and that we would be able to see a white Christmas the next morning as we woke up with anticipation. So, hopefully you can take some time this weekend or next week thinking about what this season means for you and your loved ones. Hope you get some great pictures around the tree, outside, around a meal. Blessings.

For those of you who don't know I'm 33 weeks pregnant and will be closing down Byrdhouse Photography for a personal maternity leave starting December 17, 2010. My husband who is attending law school at night and daughters will be off from school and we need to all get ready for this new baby coming. Therefore, I will not be accepting any new clients until Spring 2011. I will be keeping this blog active for the time being, but will be re-launching everything in the Spring. So excited to see what is ahead! Have lots of editing from this weekend and will hopefully post soon.

I am finally getting a makeover now that we've moved north and to the city. The new Byrdhouse Photography logo will be coming soon and will be plastered everywhere. The original logo will still be used for my new wedding's business that will fall under the same website initially and will also have a separate blog to view my portfolio. I'm really excited about the changes and hope you get a kick out of the new one created by Trent Design in Phoenix, AZ. Trent Design also created my original logo and business cards.

The changes were updated speedily for The Bump and The Knot's business networking event this coming Wednesday. Number one-needed business cards, number two- need outfit that fits! I'm finally in my last trimester of the pregnancy and did buy some clothes this weekend to fit into for the fall. Anyway, I will be posting soon.

Tomorrow Steve and I get to celebrate our 11th year anniversary. Next week we get to go to Rick Bayless' restaurant to truly celebrate via food, but this weekend should be fun. This weekend...Steve will still have his law books with him and I have to get through two books and write two papers! Ah bliss- but I guess being together is what counts.

This weekend we headed down to Indianapolis to say goodbye to Steve's sister and brother in law before they left for Taiwan today for at least the next two years. I'm thinking that will be great for the girls to pick up some mandarin chinese while their aunt and uncle are there. Anyway, thinking about them today as I'm sure they have a long flight ahead.

From the album below, its taken me awhile to finalize this couple's newborn's session. My grandmother passed away at the age of 89 this past week, so I've been a bit out of pocket to be with family.

Like I mentioned before below we did this session in the morning but it was completely storming out. The light would have been fine, but we decided to re-convene and we did get some beautiful light later.
Anyway, we worked fast when this little guy fell asleep, mom and dad got some great pictures as well.

So, we are leaving this weekend for a wedding for some dear friends of ours. I was able to snap some engagement pictures for them after the question was popped- it was really cold. So, in return we are heading down to TN for a warm wedding day. The weather should be a lot better and it will be fun to see friends we left behind last year by moving to Chicago so Steve can go to law school. Congrats Brock and Hannah!

What a beautiful afternoon and look at this red haired cutie! I love shooting in great indoor and outdoor light. Family pictures outside are just beautiful. I so enjoyed talking about the neighborhood shops- now that I'm expecting and looking at purchasing everything again from swings-slings. So, I got a good low-down of the shops around town to check out and a good food recommendation-which I need to just go back and try!

It makes a difference with your equipment...

So I've debating literally this past year if its worth it to have a more expensive camera in my camera bag when I'm out for my shoots. I have all professional gear, including two hefty digital SLRs, one I've been debating getting rid of, but this last weekend's shoot made me see...its so worth it to have good equipment.

Lights at the downtown Chicago Ferris Wheel

Our family went downtown tonight for a last hurrah before school starts next week for my eldest daughter and husband Steve. We made it through Rainforest Cafe, then went to Navy Pier to ride the Ferris Wheel and ended our evening with some ice cream at Giradelli's. It was a very fun evening and the girls where pj'ed then we headed home back to Oak Park. They fell asleep before we even got home. A great ending to a very fun day.

Anyway, I love light and facinated how it works. I took some of these shots to talk about a bit about how lighting affects our pictures. So, here are the lights of the ferris wheel and what it looked like under the light they gave off (you also have to figure in how dark it was and that I ramped my ISO to 1600- so the pictures were going to be a bit grainy).

So, here is the light source:

You can see a very slight difference, but look at these shots below and see how the slightest bit of change in the color of the light affects the picture.

Sunlight works the same way. Depending on the time of day, the weather the lighting in your photographs are affected. You can have a very warm look or very cool colored look all depending on the light that is provided. Now many photographers will compensate for the light by adding filters on their lenses, use flash, or other diffusers to make the light look more natural. Then the question comes down to what is natural light really look like.

Personally, I think coming down to accepting whatever light source you have and seeing the beauty in it, working with it and showing its varied colors within your photographs is about telling about what kind of day it was on that session. Not cancelling a session because its cloudy, because the light is actually functioning as a light box you would use in a studio. Shadows are gone and you have less sweaty pictures for sure!

Anyway, here are some shots of the evening that I love-respecting the light and seeing its beauty even if they are harsh to my photo.

We were very lucky to be able to escape for a couple of days this week with my family. I do have to mention that I caught all the fish the morning we took the canoe out. The girls are still there and will come home tomorrow to a new painted room! Yeah mom! We are trying to get everything done before Steve going back to school in a couple of weeks, so that means anything for the baby needs to be done now too. We are expecting our third child here in January, so we are excited but have to make room for another here in the next couple of months. I will be posting of course pictures soon. North Park University- Year One

For those of you who know me you know that my background is in theology. I've started a new certificate program at North Park University on the north side of Chicago in Spiritual Direction. I had my week plus long intensive class with twenty other students last week. It was very informative and I'm really excited about the class work in the next year to follow. Thank you so much for your patience for those who had to wait on me getting back to you last week. We shot at Austin Park early in the morning for this sweetie. It was a super mini session and last of the hat model sessions I posted for last month. Anyway, this little one kept smiling the whole session. It was a lot of fun to take pictures with her, and her brother who slid in finally at the end.

Its hard sometime running a business when you are a full-time mom as well with two kiddos who want you to be the event planner for the summer. Thank goodness I have a small break today. My in-laws are in town (who will be doing a photo shoot this weekend as well for their upcoming 40th anniversary) so I have escaped to the Starbucks on Lake Street downtown Oak Park today. I'm working on finishing some edits and preparing for my photo sessions tomorrow. We had crazy storms hit us this past weekend and it put me a bit behind. It's That time of year again. Children's Portraits are just beautiful in the Spring time.

What started to be a very rainy day in Chicago soon became sunny then cloudy again so I was able to grab some great shots in between the fickle weather. With the pink dress and beautiful lighting this little girl looked like she was Alice in Alice in Wonderland.

Acacia Photography and I did a swap for family pictures you can see ours on her blog. She does beautiful work and is taking her business to the next level for engagements and weddings. It has taken a bit to get our family adjusted to our new surroundings here in the Chicagoland area. I also had to go through literally through the last two years and update my website.
